By India Today Web Desk: With each passing day, shocking details continue to emerge in the Delhi Kanjhawala case, where a 20-year-old woman was dragged by a car for several kilometres, leading to her death. Now, in a fresh development, it has emerged that 10 police vehicles were deployed to trace the car which hit the victim, Anjali, and dragged her from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala, reported news agency PTI quoting sources. These 10 police vehicles included PCR vans and night patrolling units.

Now, the action taken by the Delhi Police in the accident has come under the scanner and cops, including those from the PCR unit, will be questioned as part of the inquiry to find out if there was any laxity on their part in handling the case, the PTI report said.

'CAR COULD NOT BE TRACKED DUE TO DENSE FOG'

Sources said that PCR vans from Kanjhawala, Hoshambi border and Aman Vihar area were trying to chase down the Baleno car but could not do so due to dense fog. The car had taken narrow lanes instead of the main road to evade the police, they said.

Sources say that the first PCR call was made to the police at 2.30 am on January 1 and the caller informed the police that the car fled the spot after the incident. The second PCR call, which was received around 3:30 am, informed police that the woman's body was stuck under the vehicle. But the caller could not give the police the registration number of the car due to dense fog and poor visibility.

Multiple teams were deployed under four ACPs of Rohini district to trace the car, collect details from PCR callers and identify the victim as well as the accused involved in the case. Teams from Aman Vihar, Prem Nagar, Begumpur and Prashant Vihar were deployed to crack the case.

COPS TO BE QUESTIONED

Meanwhile, Special Commissioner of Police Shalini Singh visited the Sultanpuri police station on Wednesday to examine the case files related to Kanjhawala accident. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also sought a detailed report of the incident from the Delhi Police.

A senior police officer told PTI, "Singh visited Sultanpuri police station as part of her inquiry to check the case files related to the accident. Police personnel along with those from PCR department will also be questioned as part of the inquiry to ascertain if there was any laxity on the part of them in responding to the incident and if they acted swiftly."

The inquiry will also be looking if all standard operating procedures were followed by police and media reports about the accident will also be analysed as part of the ongoing inquiry into the matter, the officer said.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

A 20-year-old woman died in the wee hours of Sunday after she was dragged for around 12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in Delhi after the scooter she was riding collided with a car. The incident has caused an uproar in the national capital and police have arrested five accused in the case, charging them with culpable homicide.

The post-mortem report has revealed that the victim sustained 40 external injuries and her ribs were exposed from the back. The base of her skull was fractured and her "brain matter was missing". She had injuries to the head, spine and lower limbs.

The autopsy has ruled out sexual assault and the family members have alleged that victim's friend, Nidhi, who was with her on the scooter but fled the spot, was a part of the conspiracy. Nidhi told the police that she was screaming in pain but the car driver didn't stop and ran over her.

Anjali's kin, while addressing a presser, claimed that her autopsy report showed no signs of her having alcohol on the night of the horrific accident. Earlier, Anjali's friend Nidhi claimed that Anjali was drunk on the night when the accident took place.

Five occupants of the car, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, have been arrested in connection with the case after being booked under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code.

Ashram flyover closure: Traffic jam at Moolchand, AIIMS, congestion at Delhi-Noida border

By Ritika: Commuters in the national capital and Noida, especially in stretches passing through the south Delhi areas, have been facing a harrowing time since Monday due to the closure of the Ashram flyover on January 1. The construction work on the final leg of the extension of the Ashram flyover to the DND flyway began on Monday.

Ashram Flyover Road will be closed due to the construction of a connecting road between the Ashram Flyover and the New Delhi-Noida Direct (DND) Flyover. Once the completion of this flyover is done, lakhs of people commuting from Noida and other parts of Delhi to the southern part of the city will be freed from cumbersome traffic jams.

The flyover will allow passengers to bypass three traffic signals between Ashram Chowk and DND Flyway, making vehicular movement smoother.

Slight traffic snarls were witnessed along the roads leading to the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) at 7.15 am, showed real time data.

Real time showed traffic congestion from AIIMS towards Lodhi road at 7.13 am. Traffic was slow from Chirag Delhi to Ring Road at 7.15 am. Traffic snarls were seen from Moolchand to Capitan Gaur Marg road at 7.30 am, which gradually worsens at 8 am.

The 1.5-km-long Ashram flyover connects South Delhi to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Ashram Chowk is a crucial link between south and central Delhi as well as with Faridabad. The junction links the Mathura Road and the Ring Road (connecting Lajpat Nagar-Sarai Kale Khan as well as the DND flyover).

The closure of Ashram flyover has affected the traffic moving towards Noida and Ghaziabad as the carriageway connects the south Delhi areas with these two cities. People travelling towards AIIMS, Safdarjung Hospital, Apollo Hospital and other medical facilities from eastern Delhi areas, Noida and Ghaziabad are also facing slight traffic jams.

The closure of the Ashram flyover has also been attributed to the massive traffic jams on the Ring Road, from Sarai Kale Khan to Moolchand. Heavy traffic jam was witnessed near IP Extension metro station towards Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram Ring Road in Delhi on Wednesday evening.

TRAFFIC SNARLS AT BARAPULLAH, CHILLAH BORDER

The Barapullah Elevated Corridor is one of the worst stretches for people to cross in the evening hours as vehicles routinely remain stranded in bumper-to-bumper jams that stretch on for several kilometres.“Crossing Barapullah in the evening rush hours was difficult before but is now nightmarish,” Ravindra Bhat, a commuter stuck while trying to reach Noida, was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.

The Delhi-Noida border witnessed traffic congestion briefly on Wednesday evening due to the ongoing construction work, news agency PTI reported. Hundreds of vehicles to and fro Delhi were impacted due to the congestion as they crawled bumper-to-bumper between the Chilla border and the Mahamaya Flyover.

The traffic police advised people to opt for DND's alternative roads like the Ashok Nagar or Jhandupura border routes to avoid inconvenience. For real-time assistance, the Noida traffic police shared its helpline number 9971009001, reported PTI.

LIST OF ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

The traffic police had earlier issued an advisory and cautioned commuters about the bottleneck on the route due to the construction work in Delhi. The Delhi Police has also cautioned commuters in south and southeast areas of the national capital to plan their journeys well in advance due to the closure.

-Commuters coming from the Badarpur side are advised to follow Mata Mandir Marg for Ring Road and Sarai Kale Khan, and commuters coming from Badarpur, Sarita Vihar and Jamia side are advised to follow U-turn for Captain Gaur Marg, Lajpat Nagar, AIIMS.
